About Holland America Line

The 14 ships of the Holland America Line fleet have one thing in common: tradition. This is a venerable cruise line with a history spanning nearly 150 years, and voyages place an emphasis on the company's rich heritage. The Holland America Line is aimed at more mature travellers, and couples over 50 make up the majority of its clientele. This is a cruise line for those who enjoy the pomp and elegance of ocean journeys.

Although, as its name suggests, the Holland America Line is based out of the Netherlands, its ships voyage worldwide, with numerous journeys on offer. Although short trips are available, such as a 4-night hop down the US West Coast, Holland America cruises specialize in longer journeys, with plenty of options for travellers wanting to spend 20 days or more at sea. On these lengthy voyages, Holland America makes a point of visiting ports which other cruise lines overlook. A 54-night round trip on the Prinsendam departs from Fort Lauderdale, visits a few Caribbean islands, then crosses the Atlantic to the gorgeous tropical Cape Verde Islands before hugging the west coast of Africa, stopping in Gambia and Senegal on its way to the Mediterranean. Other journeys travel from Hong Kong to South Africa, or from Australia to the west coast of Canada.

Holland America Line ships offer a wide variety of shore excursions. The company has a long-term partnership with Food & Wine magazine, so a number of gastronomic excursions are on offer in the Mediterranean and Northern European destinations. Passengers can go on culinary walking tours and take cooking classes to learn to prepare local delicacies from Greece, Italy, and Spain. Cultural excursions are also common, and the company is justifiably proud of its team of experts who will help guests learn more about the history and traditions of the destinations visited. Food & Wine is not the only important partnership that passengers can appreciate. A collaboration with BBC Earth allows guests to take advantage of a number of onboard enrichment programs, with guests able to enjoy documentaries, seminars, photography classes and live music. Wine tastings, language classes and mixology sessions are common onboard, and passengers on Holland America Line ships will always be able to improve their skill sets while at sea.

While pools and onboard gyms allow guests to stay active onboard, and lively poolside activities are common during the daylight hours, tradition continues to reign on the Holland America Line. Afternoon tea and ballroom dancing are hugely popular activities for the company's clientele of seasoned cruise-goers, with formal nights particularly successful. Don't be surprised to see men in tuxedos and women in full-length ball gowns - although a smart suit or cocktail dress will also be entirely appropriate.

The Koningsdam (2016) is the newest addition to the Holland America fleet, although the Nieuw Statendam is scheduled to make its debut in 2018. Newer ships have a brighter, more colorful decor, although all vessels have plenty of quiet spots for guests who want some privacy. The smallest and oldest Holland America ship, the Prinsendam (launched in 1988), has 419 cabins, while the Koningsdam offers 1,331. Standard cabins across all ships feature flat-screen TVs and DVD players, bathrobes, high-quality bed linens and Elemis Aromapure amenities for the bathroom. Complimentary fresh fruit is available on request. Passengers who upgrade to a suite can enjoy a whirlpool bath, separate living room, dining room and dressing room areas, a pantry, microwave, refrigerator, and Bose Bluetooth-enabled sound systems. Some ships offer spa rooms for health-conscious guests, with eco-friendly amenities and special spa privileges. No matter the vessel, a Holland America cruise promises an enriching, relaxing and above all, high-class experience.
